How to Make Video Production Simpler

A gaffer once told me, production is like a gas, it fills the room. What he meant was, if you have more time and more budget and more resources, production will use it all. It will fill the room.
Too many meetings. Too many rounds. Too many people involved. Too much time spent talking about making something instead of actually making it.
And for a lot of clients, that’s the real frustration. Not the video itself. The process around it.
Most teams don’t need (or don’t have time for) a five-month production cycle or a giant agency workflow. They just need strong work that gets made efficiently and actually helps the business.
The good news is: video production doesn’t need to be so complicated.
Here are a few things we’ve learned over the years developing and producing content across healthcare, higher education, retail, automotive, restaurant, nonprofit, and B2B categories.

Start With the Goal

Obvious, right? But surprisingly it’s where a lot of projects immediately go off the rails.
“We need a video” isn’t a goal.
The real goal is usually something like:
When the goal is clear, the production gets simpler because every decision becomes easier.
What needs to be shown?
What actually matters?
What can we live without?
A lot of unnecessary complexity disappears once the objective is defined clearly.

Not Every Challenge Requires a Hollywood Production

One of the biggest misconceptions in marketing is that bigger production automatically means better results.
It doesn’t.
Some of the most effective content is straightforward, focused, written clearly, authentic and, of course, well shot.
We hate to say it, but the average viewer usually cares far more about clarity and relevance than production values.
Now, that doesn’t mean production quality doesn’t matter. It 100% does. But there’s a difference between polished and professional and overbuilt and inefficient.

Keep Strategy and Production Connected

This is where projects often start breaking down.
One team develops the strategy.
Another team writes the script.
Another team handles production.
Another team edits.
By the end, it’s like the old game of telephone, and the original thinking gets diluted or lost along the way.
The simplest productions usually happen when the people shaping the idea stay connected through execution.

Less Decision-Makers? Um, yes please.

The more layers, the slower everything happens.
Feedback gets less focused.
Signals get crossed.
Revisions pile up.
And quality suffers.
Yes, good production needs collaboration. But it also needs clarity.
Less chefs almost always make better work faster.

Video Production Doesn’t Need to Feel Complicated

For most businesses, the hardest part isn’t the shoot itself. It’s figuring out where to start and managing the process around it.
That’s why simplifying production matters.
Clearer process. Better work. Faster output.
